In 2022 we started producing Blu-ray discs. Blu-rays are High Definition with 1080 lines of resolution compared to the 480 lines for DVD which was intended for the older “Standard Definition” tube tv’s. Both the vertical & horizontal resolution are doubled so it’s 4 times the resolution. Also Blu-rays hold nearly 6 times as much data so fitting over two hours of recital footage on a disc means that the motion holds up better and faces are more detailed. In short, it’s a much more life like image and better matched with modern HD and 4K screens.
Can a DVD player play Blu-ray?
No. Blu-ray’s require a Blu-ray player. Blu-ray players can play DVD’s, but not the other way around. Game systems like PS3, PS4, Xbox One S and One X, can play Blu-ray and others may as well. Computers that have BD-R drives can as well. If you don’t already have a Blu-ray player, around $60 seems to be a low sale price. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Philips-Blu-Ray-and-DVD-Player-BDP1502-F7/205734650?athbdg=L1200.
